Site of mid-1800’s sugar plantation covering over 3,500 acres. The Gamble Mansion was built principally by enslaved laborers and artisans from native materials over the span of 5-6 years. It is an outstanding example of antebellum construction. In May, 1865, it is reported that J.P. Benjamin took refuge in the mansion during his escape to England. Today the mansion is furnished in period items to give visitors the feel of frontier living. The Gamble Plantation Historic State Park offers visitors guided tours of the plantation as well as picking areas and a visitor’s center.
